One of our favorite venues in Pittsburgh is the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. Named one of the best garden wedding venues in the world by Harper’s Bazaar, Phipps is a place where almost any gown looks beautiful. However, if you are looking for a gown that matches the botanic energy of the conservatory, Gemma Bridal is the place.
At Gemma Bridal in Pittsburgh’s Bloomfield neighborhood, we’ve helped many soon-to-be-weds find their perfect dress for a Phipps wedding. Here’s our complete guide to what works, what doesn’t, and exactly which gowns we’d recommend for every space in the conservatory.
In our experience, the gowns that work best at Phipps share a few qualities:
Phipps offers several distinct wedding spaces, each with its own personality. Here’s how to dress for each one.
The vibe: Old World romance. Think French countryside, manicured gardens, bronze statues, and an Italian wishing well. This space calls for something with a timeless, elevated quality.
What works: Romantic gowns with delicate detailing like scalloped lace, soft draping, or a beautifully simple silk slip. Grace Loves Lace’s stretch lace silhouettes look absolutely stunning here, as does anything from Daughters of Simone with their 70s-inspired, naturally romantic aesthetic.
What to avoid: Very casual or very modern architectural silhouettes can feel jarring against the Broderie Room’s classical elegance.
Gemma Bridal’s Designer picks for the Broderie Room:
The vibe: Lush, exotic, adventurous. Deep greens, dramatic plants, dappled natural light filtering through the glass ceiling. This is the space where your wedding photos will genuinely look like something out of a magazine, and you can really go for something more fashion-forward, yet timeless.
What works: Fluid silhouettes that echo the organic, flowing nature of the space. A slip dress or bias-cut gown in silk or stretch lace moves beautifully as you walk through the conservatory.
Gemma picks for the Tropical Forest:
The vibe: Modern, light-filled, and architectural. The floor-to-ceiling glass creates a beautiful indoor-outdoor feeling. You’re surrounded by natural light and views of the conservatory while being in a polished, contemporary reception space.
What works: This space is flexible enough to support almost any gown style, but the glass walls and bamboo floors give it a clean, modern aesthetic. Both minimalist and romantic gowns shine here.
Gemma Bridal’s picks for the Special Events Hall:
The vibe: Grand, open, and romantic. This is the most dramatic of the Phipps spaces with its sweeping grounds, fountain views, and open sky. Your dress needs to hold its own in a big, beautiful outdoor setting.
What works: Flowing silhouettes with movement that trail elegantly as you walk across the garden, that look alive in natural outdoor light. A longer floral train reads beautifully in this space.
Gemma picks for the Outdoor Garden:
Phipps Conservatory is one of Pittsburgh’s most eco-conscious venues. If that ethos resonates with you, it might influence your gown choice too.
Several of our designers share that commitment. Grace Loves Lace produces all of their gowns ethically and sustainably, and donates to the Pollinate Group, a nonprofit supporting women entrepreneurs, with every gown sold. Daughters of Simone uses 100% natural silk and eco-conscious production. Many of our designers are independent and woman owned and manufacture their gowns by hand in small ateliers. Choosing a designer whose values align with your venue’s is a meaningful detail that’s worth considering.
If you’re getting married at Phipps and want to find a gown that does justice to that stunning venue, we’d love to help. When you book your appointment at Gemma, mention your Phipps wedding in the notes, your stylist will help pull a curated selection of gowns chosen specifically for the space, the light, and the botanical romance of your venue.
Our Bloomfield boutique is open Thursday–Sunday by appointment. Gowns from $1,800–$5,000.
